This page is a result of my interest in geneolgy and curiosity about other people called Elster on the Web. Back when I came on to the Internet (then called ARPAnet and CSNET) in the early 1980s I really did not see anyone else. How times have changed! Well over 200 Elsters can now be found in the U.S. white pages (Web phone book).

Elster -- Meaning and Geneology

"Elster" is the German word for the bird magpie (Norw: skjaere), and also the name of a river in Germany ("die Elster"). Elsterparken, a park in Trondheim, Norway is named after one of my forefathers.

My family name stems from what used to be Eastern Germany through Peter Lorentzen Elster. He came to Norway in 1705 as an organ builder and settled with his Norwegian wife. He himself was raised in Denmark. Just about all Elsters currently in Norway are descendants of Peter. Due to few male Norwegian Elsters being born through the generation, there are surprisingly few of us. A bird (Ger. "Elster"= magpie) is found on the helmet of our family's coat-of-arms which has a deer on the shield.

Dr. Allen D. Elster, M.D. Professor Neuroradiology/Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Dept. of Radiologic Sciences, Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Allen received his B.E. from Vanderbilt Univ., 1976; M.A from Oxford Univ. in 1978, and M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine, M.D. in 1980. Residency: Massachusetts General Hospital 1980-1983, Univ. of Texas Medical School-Houston 1983-1986. Allen is frequently cited in medical journals re. tomography, MRI, etc.
Dr. Arthur Elster, M.D.,Director of the AMA's department of Adolescent Health. He was elected president of the Society for Adolescent Medicine in March 1997 according to AMA-ASSN.org.
Dr. Charlotte ELSTER -- Ohio U. Dept. Phys. & Astronomy. Charlotte got her doctorate, Dr. rer. nat., from the University of Bonn, Germany in Theoretical Nuclear Physics in 1986. She has several pubs. on the Web.

Clark Elster, Artist, Seattle, Wa.
Clark is my seccond cousin through his gradfather who was my grandfather's brother (got it? :), Barney (Bjarne). Bjarne emigrated to the states from Norway when he was 17. Some of Clarks pastels can be viewed at his webpage . Clark is charter and signature member and past president of the Northwest Pastel Society.
Dr. Erin Elster of "Elster Chiropractic" in Boulder, Colorado. She is a "certified chiropractic upper cervical specialist" who treats diseases, including allergies through the upper part of the spine, and holds a Doctor of Chiropractic, Palmer College, Iowa, Magna Cum Laude, 1996 and B.A. from University of California, Berkeley, 1991.
Jennifer Elster, Art Designer, has designed covers for David Bowie, and several magazines.

Jon Elster is a famous Political Science/Philospohy writer from the Norwegian Elster branch. Born in 1940 and part of the "Author" branch of Norwegian Elsters, his close relatives include several well-known Norwegian authors (Kristian, Magli, Torolf, etc). As indicated by his Web page, he is now at faculty member at Columbia. Among Jon's publications is the book "Marxism, Funtionalism, and Game Theory: The Case for Methodological Individualism, Theory and Society," 1982. Before coming to Columbia University, he taught at Paris, Oslo and Chicago. "He is currently working on a comparative study of constitution-making processes from the Federal Convention to the present and on a study of retroactive justice in coutries that have recently emerged from authoritarian or totalitarian rule."
Kevin Elster's "Fan-Appreciation Entertainment Site". Famous baseball player previously with the Mets and Ranger's with uncountably many references on the Web. -- He originally beat me to registering "elster.com"! However, his "www.elster.com" is now taken over by the German oil service related company ELSTER-AMCO. Kevin's new site at "http://www.kevinelster.com" was still under construction as of May 1999.
I have been asked a couple of times whether Kevin and I are related, which is possible, but I just don't know yet. Probably more than 10 generations back ...

Dr. Nanette Elster Visiting Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice, Chicago-Kent College, Illinois Institute of Technology. Nanette received a B.A. from the Univ. of Illinois, a J.D. from Loyola Univ. in Chicago, and a Master of Public Health from Boston University.
Dr. Richard S. Elster, Provost, Naval Postgraduate School. He was born in Deadwood, South Dakota on Dec. 3, 1939. He attended the Univ. of Minnesota in Minneapolis where he received of a B.A, M.A, and Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology (1967).

Torolf Elster, Norwegian author with many references on the Web. He was the director of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corp. (NRK) in the 1980s. (Back then the only Norwegian TV channel!). One of his mystery books are reviewed at Aften Bladet, a Norwegian news source.

Non-Personal Elster Sites

The Elster Group used to be a site at "http://wi.bwl.uni-mainz.de/~strecker/elster". Originating in Germany I consisted of companies from a variety of origins and of different nationalities. According to their "blurb" they are linked by one objective: the development, manufacture and marketing of products and services in the field of gas supply and gas utilization. They are the publishers of "Elster Journal" . I suspect they are the group that merged with AMCO into becoming the German oil service related company now known as ELSTER-AMCO.
