SSAI for Østersund

Requirements for the 2007 Edition
This course has gone through many changes over the years, both in Trondheim and Østersund.  This is the first year that the two courses are so similar.  Essentially, the 2007 Østersund edition is a copy of the Trondheim course, while much of the material in the former Østersund course will become part of a new course in Trondheim (beginning in spring term, 2008).

This year, the Østersund version will be largely on-line.  All of the course materials are posted on the materials page, as are all of the homeworks.  To receive credit for the course, a student must successfully complete homeworks h1,h2 and h3 along with the final exam.  NOTE: homework h4 has been dropped from the list of requirements!

The homeworks must be delivered as one large report of about 15 pages, 5 per homework, at the end of the semester.  The delivery date for this report is April 15, 2007.

The final exam is a take-home essay which students will have only a short time to write.  This year’s  exam: exam-ostersund-2007.doc  .  The essays must be emailed to me no later than 10 pm (22:00) on Tuesday, April 3rd.

For all deliveries, send a PDF or DOC file to me at the following email address: keithd@idi.ntnu.no

I have given lectures on much of the material in the course during a few visits to Østersund.  The first visit was in early February.  At that time, I lectured on evolutionary algorithms, covering the first three pdf files on the course-materials page plus the powerpoint slides in ea-intro.ppt, which is also available on the materials page.

My second visit to Ostersund was March 5-7, when I lectured on neural networks.  I mainly used sources backprop.pdf and neurorep.ppt, both available from the Materials page.  I also told the students that they should read the first 4 chapters of  Callan’s neural network book; anything in those 4 chapters could appear on the final exam.

These two visits conclude my lecturing for the course.
